No. 1 South Dakota State is looking to cap off an undefeated season by claiming its second consecutive FCS championship with a win over Montana in the FCS Championship game on Sunday afternoon.

The Jackrabbits, riding a 28-game win streak, are hoping to become just the fifth repeat champion in FCS history. Last season, they trounced North Dakota State in the championship, 45-21.

Montana, the No. 2 seed, enters the showdown at 13-1 after a pair of thrilling playoff victories. The Grizzlies beat Furman in overtime in the quarterfinals before outlasting North Dakota State in a double-overtime classic in the semifinals. Montana denied a potential game-tying two-point conversion to secure the win.

The Jackrabbits tout the No. 1 scoring defense in the FCS, allowing just 9.7 points per game. And they boast the third-highest scoring offense, with 38.4 points per game. That unit is led by quarterback Mark Gronowski — the MVP of last year’s championship game — and Isaiah Davis, the FCS’s leading rusher.

Quarterback Clifton McDowell anchors a versatile Montana offensive outfit. Defensively, the Grizzlies have a formidable unit, too; they allow just 16.8 points per game, the fifth-best in the FCS. The Grizzlies survived against North Dakota State in 2 OT in the semifinals, winning 31-29. It was the 2nd straight game which wasn’t decided in regulation, as the Montana won 35-28 in OT against Furman in the quarters.

The Jackrabbits have been a machine, winning all 14 games, including 12 by double-digits. South Dakota State steamrolled Albany 59-0 in the semifinals on Dec. 15, and the defense has pitched a shutout in 3 of the past 5 games overall.

South Dakota State is the defending FCS champion, winning 45-21 against North Dakota State at Toyota Stadium last season. The Jacks are trying to become the 1st team to repeat since North Dakota State won 3 titles in a row from 2017-19.

Montana is searching for its 1st national title since dispatching Furman 13-6 back in 2001 behind legendary coach Joe Glenn in a game played in Chattanooga, Tenn. Montana also secured the natty in 1995. It lost back-to-back chances for the title in the FCS Championship Games in 2008 and 2009.

The Jackrabbits are on a quest to win the national championship for the second year in a row. This is the third time in the last four seasons the South Dakota State has made it to this point, also losing to Sam Houston in 2020. They come into this game on the third-longest winning streak in FCS history, having won their last 28 games. Quarterback Mark Gronowski has had a terrific junior season, leading the country in passer rating (182.7). He will be in tough against a talented Montana secondary.

They would become the first team to win consecutive championships since North Dakota State won three straight national titles from 2017 to 2019.

Montana, who is 13-1 coming into this game, has not won a national championship since they won their second in 2001. In fact, they have not gotten this far since the 2009 season. They punched their ticket to Sunday by taking down a strong North Dakota State team, in overtime, in the semifinal.

Their offense is led by the dynamic Clifton McDowell, who has shown his legs can be as lethal as his arm. That said, SDSU’s defense is solid in their own right, meaning McDowell will have to trust weapons Junior Bergren and Eli Gillman.

It’s the first time since the spring 2021 title game that the teams seeded No. 1 and No. 2 will square off in the playoffs. It’s the first time since October 2022 that the teams ranked first and second in the polls will match up.

SDSU enters with a 14-0 record and has won 28 straight games, the third longest streak in subdivision history behind 39- and 33-game streaks by North Dakota State. UM holds a 13-1 mark and has won 10 games in a row.
